Puffins and Pirates Tour
Vestmannaeyjar is known for many beautiful and interesting things. Puffins as Vestmannaeyjar are the biggest puffin colony in the world and in this tour you will witness in closeness how beautiful this bird is along with some interesting facts about him. Vestmannaeyjar also has a rich and interesting history with pirates over the centuries and we will visit the most famous locations where the pirates clashed with locals along with hearing the history behind it.
Gear yourself up for driving around beautiful Vestmannaeyjar and listen to the tour guide telling you thrilling stories about the pirates and witness the amazing Puffin along the way.
We will start the tour by driving to the west coast of Vestmannaeyjar. The first stop is the amazing elephant rock where you can see this big rock creature dip his trunk into the sea.
Next up is driving to the southern point of Vestmannaeyjar, Stórhöfði, to visit the biggest Puffin colony in the world. The driving on the way is one of the most spectacular scenery of the island as you will see the island cluster of the Vestmannaeyjar in all its glory and if the weather is good you will see all the way to Surtsey, but Surtsey is the southernmost island in the Vestmannaeyjar cluster and was formed in an underwater eruption on November 14, 1963. At Stórhöfði the view in all directions is magnificent, despite the fact that the weather can make you spin around as it is one of the windiest places in the country. We will take the walk to a special place and give ourselves plenty of time to observe the crown jewel of Vestmannaeyjar, the puffins, watch them play around on the slope, take off and come in to land while the guide tells us interesting facts about the puffins and their surroundings.
When everyone has had a good look at the Puffins and learned all the interesting facts about them we hop on our ATVs and enter the path of the thrilling Pirates. The tour delves into the history of the pirates, particularly the Barbary corsairs who stormed Vestmannaeyjar in 1627. The tour guide will tell thrilling stories about the raid, how the pirates arrived, and the dramatic confrontations with the locals. Along the path, you’ll learn about the clever ways the islanders tried to defend themselves and hide from the pirates, offering a glimpse into the resourcefulness of the people during these terrifying times.
Our end of the pirates path lies to Herjólfstown, where you will witness the Icelandic pirates, who, like puffins, were settlers in Vestmannaeyjar. We will see how the pirates looked, how they lived and the thrilling story about them. This part of the tour will provide an intriguing look into what life was like in Vestmannaeyjar centuries ago.
This is our most easy driving tour, no off road driving, just driving in the beautiful scenery of Vestmannaeyjar, stopping in some of the most interesting places the island has to offer.
